Description
**A simple WordPress plugin troubleshooting checklist that saves a lot of time**
When a WordPress site suddenly breaks after installing or updating a plugin, it can be difficult to know whether the problem is the plugin, the theme, WooCommerce, PHP, or another plugin conflict.
Here’s the troubleshooting process I usually follow:
1. **Create a backup first**
Before changing anything, take a database + files backup.
2. **Enable WordPress debugging**
Check `wp-content/debug.log` for PHP errors instead of guessing.
3. **Test for plugin conflicts**
Temporarily deactivate plugins and reactivate them one by one to identify the conflict.
4. **Test with a default theme**
If the issue disappears with a default WordPress theme, the problem may be related to the active theme or its integrations.
5. **Check PHP and WordPress versions**
Some plugins require newer PHP versions or specific WordPress/WooCommerce versions.
6. **Check browser console errors**
JavaScript conflicts can cause buttons, forms, AJAX requests, or admin screens to stop working.
7. **Check WooCommerce template overrides**
If you’re using WooCommerce, outdated theme templates can cause unexpected behavior after WooCommerce updates.
8. **Clear all caches**
Check WordPress cache, server cache, CDN cache, and browser cache.
9. **Check the plugin’s changelog**
If the problem started immediately after an update, compare the current version with the previous version and review reported changes.
10. **Don’t edit the plugin directly**
If a fix is needed, use hooks, filters, custom code, or a small custom plugin whenever possible. Direct plugin edits will usually be overwritten during the next update.
**One thing that helps a lot:**
When asking for help, include your WordPress version, PHP version, plugin version, theme, WooCommerce version if applicable, exact error message, and the steps that reproduce the problem.
That information makes it much easier for someone to actually diagnose the issue instead of guessing.
What plugin-related problem have you found particularly difficult to troubleshoot?
